WIUC 2025 - Barcelona
During the period from November 11 to 17, 2025, student-athletes took part in the 10th World InterUniversities Championships held in Barcelona, which gathered more than 5,000 students from over 30 countries worldwide. A total of 62 athletes, members of the Sports Association Omega, represented their faculty and homeland in five sports: athletics, futsal, basketball, volleyball, and handball.
This remarkable project, titled “Light in Motion, Strength in Unity,” was launched with a clear goal—to promote sport at the faculty and strengthen identity and unity among students. However, it quickly exceeded initial expectations. Its estimated value surpassed €50,000, with half of the funding secured through partners and sponsors who recognized its significance and potential. Participation in the competition in Barcelona provided student-athletes with valuable international experience, opportunities to exchange sporting and cultural knowledge with competitors from other countries, and a platform to promote sportsmanship, teamwork, and active student life. For nearly a quarter of the participants, this was also their first time flying—an experience made even more special by sharing it with their peers while proudly representing their faculty and country at such a major event.
The sporting segment began exceptionally well, with a series of victories across all disciplines. Volleyball, futsal, and handball teams finished the group stage undefeated in first place, while the basketball team secured second place after losing to the defending champions. On the third day of competition, volleyball and handball concluded their journey in the round of 16, while athletics stood out with a seventh-place finish in the women’s mile (1600 m).
On the final, fourth day of the tournament, futsal and basketball teams competed in the quarterfinals. However, after an intense schedule and several consecutive competition days, fatigue took its toll, and both teams ultimately achieved an impressive fifth place at the world championship in Barcelona.
Beyond the competition itself, students participated in educational and cultural activities, including organized visits to landmarks and museums, attending professional basketball and futsal matches, and experiencing a flamenco performance. The social segment included activities designed to strengthen unity within the faculty, such as a pub quiz, a sports day at Barceloneta, collective cheering, and networking with students from other universities.
Sport shapes team spirit and work habits, develops strategic thinking, stress resilience, discipline, and the ability to make quick decisions—all essential qualities of a successful engineer.
We express our sincere gratitude to our sponsors and donors who recognized the value of this project and supported our participation in the WIUC event in Barcelona. Thanks to your trust and support of student sports, our students were able to represent their faculty and the Republic of Croatia with dignity, responsibility, and pride on the international stage, promoting the values of sportsmanship and unity that lie at the core of our project “Light in Motion, Strength in Unity.”
We extend special thanks to the faculty staff whose knowledge and dedication greatly contributed to the organizational and administrative aspects of the project, as well as to the faculty administration for their understanding, support, and constructive cooperation throughout the preparation and implementation process. We also thank all volunteers and participants whose effort and commitment made this project a success.
The opportunity to do what we love—on the other side of Europe—is an experience that rarely comes along.
Thank you for believing in us and enabling our students to create moments that will stay with them for a lifetime.
